Do You Speak Tween?

I have two tween girls at home aged 10 and 12. This makes me an expert at Tween Speak. Maybe. I know that their slang can be baffling at times so I’m here to help. Here are some popular terms that I will translate.

Legit — It means “literally” as in “I legit just got a boyfriend.” She’d then have to say (if she were my daughter), “My mom legit made me dump my boyfriend because she said I was too young. Then she said go to your room and work on your math because math is the key to getting into a STEM career. Is it too late to get adopted?” [easyazon_link identifier=”B07798CPQH” locale=”US” tag=”greatbookgood-20″ cart=”n” popups=”n”]Legit[/easyazon_link]

Tipping — No, this is not referring to what you do after eating a good meal at a restaurant. This is where girls actually dye the last few inches of their hair a color not found in nature. I know. Why just the ends? Why not the whole head? Why do it at all? Ours is not to ask why and tipping has the added benefit of limited damage. That is, if your daughter comes to her senses and wants to revert back to a more conventional look, it’s only a few snips and voila! back to normal.  [easyazon_link identifier=”B076SFFXDG” locale=”US” tag=”greatbookgood-20″ cart=”n” popups=”n”]Tipping[/easyazon_link]

Lit — This means exciting as in “The party was lit.” I don’t think I want my daughter going to a lit party. In fact, I think this is something I want my daughter to say, “My mom legit won’t let me go to any party that’s lit.” No, wait, what I really want her to say is, “I won’t legit go to a lit party because I’m too busy studying algebra to prepare for my future career as an electrical engineer”.  A mom can dream, right? [easyazon_link identifier=”B074MHSDFX” locale=”US” tag=”greatbookgood-20″ cart=”n” popups=”n”]Lit[/easyazon_link]  [easyazon_image align=”right” cart=”n” height=”70″ identifier=”B074MHSDFX” locale=”US” nf=”n” src=”https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/410V6Qdft7L._SL75_.jpg” tag=”greatbookgood-20″ width=”75″]

Savage — Doing something impressive [and maybe stupid] as in, “You spray painted that wall? Dang, you’re such a savage!” Cue the police, but I digress. [easyazon_link identifier=”B0757Y6B7Y” locale=”US” tag=”greatbookgood-20″ cart=”n” popups=”n”]Savage[/easyazon_link]

If you’re really not sure of slang your tween is using, go ahead and google it. And try not to be horrified. The main thing is to encourage your teen to do well in math because being lit legit doesn’t pay the bills no matter how savage everyone thinks you are.
